Only in the Movies

Those classic leading men
Understood a few things
The younger generation
Seems to have forgotten,
The importance of being
Unapologetically male…
The cut of his suit just right
And complete comprehension
Of the purpose of a belt,
No piercings or tattoos
Flaunted for all to see.
Strong and firmly in control,
Oozing charm and fedora cool,
Martini and cigarette in hand,
With a great appreciation
For the luscious curves
Of a real woman.

I have to say that finding the pictures for this post was one of my favorite things I've done in a while! While they may be from well before my time, I definitely have a weakness for Cary Grant and Dean Martin...all I can usually muster is a wistful "Wow."

tis true, the modern man has been feminized to the point where these men you describe are not only difficult to find, but looked on with disdain when they surface. Sad

watching Mad Men by any chance?...Wonder what Bogart would say to this poem: Here's looking at you, kid!

These men did set the bar very high!

I agree with you on all of this.
Love all the old movies. They truly knew how to be stars without all the trash nowadays. You picked some Hollywood greats there. I spent yesterday watching Bette Davis and Claude Rains movies. Can't beat those golden oldies.
Thanks for the smiles Mary.

As a 49 year old man who doesn't understand the narcissism and vanity of the metrosexual male, I say your poem is perfect. Or as Adam Carolla's book title opines "In Fifty Years, We'll All Be Chicks."

Oh, sighhhhhhh.
Wonderful post, Mary! I remember these leading men.
Lovely, virile men, all of them, but my special penchant has always been for Dino. So gorgeous, with a voice that can slither under my skin, even when he isn't singing.

I agree... and I'm waiting for those pants to come back up before my boys get to that age (b/c they will not be very happy with me).

I'm afraid what we took for "real man" was all hype and show--and do you really miss the cigarettes and drunkenness? I took this for a great satire until I read the comments! Oh, I too love old movies, but I am not fooled--except by Spencer Tracy, maybe--but he (and Cary Grant) had Katharine Hepburn. So, while I too dislike piercings, makeup, nail polish and too-small tees on men, I truly do not know what to wish for. I remember ironing all those shirts for a suit man. Not happy making.
