The story of a life
Is often written
As just a line,
Major events
Demarcated
Chronologically…
Birth,
School,
Job,
Marriage,
Children,
Death…
Incremental marks
That neglect
The essence of life…
The scar on your knee
Earned breaking
The third grade
Jump rope record…
A lingering first kiss
Behind the bleachers,
Homecoming game,
Freshman year…
Learning that cold cereal
Tastes better in bed
Than it ever could at the table,
Especially when served
By five year old hands…
Yearnings whispered
Over birthday candles,
Wishbones
And falling stars.
If we live our lives
Focused
On that next mark,
We will miss
The moments
That truly define us.

Cold cereal really does taste better in bed!
Your reminders of what is really important in life are well-chosen. We should not let the moments that define us fade unnoticed.
True. And your poem, shaped like a line itself, got wider with the luscious details --even just a few of them. The economy of the first half may fir into a form, but it preserves only statistics.
Yes, Mary! It is those small happenings that really give life its substance. A birthday means very little; but the wish made when one blows out the candle....now THAT is important. What a difference between the first part and the second!
Ah this is nice--all the lovely details that define a person and life so much better than those big demarcations.
There are milestones in our lives, but its the little moments that define us and make us alive ~ Lovely message dear ~
I so love this. Especially the reminder not to miss the moments that most define us.
Its not the length but the small details that make up a long grand life.very well said.
Marking out time in advance and marking time can blind us to so many inspiring sidetracks. Beautiful ideas!
I will listen and enjoy your wisdom every day of the year...wow, this was a great message cloaked in exceptional writing. And the words had the perfect "feel" to them. Loved it.
aw, breakfast in bed, that image strikes me, too :) important!
Aha, I've often eaten cereal in bed. Cheerios, mostly.
You're right, if we aren't participating in our moments, we will miss our lives.
