In the Farmer’s World

Kat Mortensen©2012

So much in a farmer’s world
Depends on chance:
Will the rains come?
Will the grain market be up or down?
Can that old combine survive
For just one more season?
Even as his fields lay barren
While the winter winds howl,
He takes comfort knowing
His greatest harvest,
The true bounty of his life,
Can be found within the walls
Of that old yellow farmhouse.

I definitely think that though most people's lives depend on chance, a farmer's life does even moreso.

I am honoured that such a deep, emotional poem has been spurred by one of my photos.

Thank you!

this poem fires off a series of questions. I like the way you dismiss those concerns by offering up the farm house as an absolute.

I guess when one's livelihood depends upon the land, one awakens each day with many unanswered questions.

A farmer's life is indeed hard...you captured the struggle well and where his true wealth lies.

This is a paining of the lives I grew up around. A microcosm of the way life works and the way people interact. I look bqck fondly on my days working on the farm, but the only part I would want to keep living was the family part. the farming part is a hell of a lot of work and worry. Great job.

I couldn't live with so much uncertainty. It would be nice to be more connected with the earth, however. You write about the dilemma very well.

Well Done! You wrote so well of the risk of this lifestyle, so dependent on the weather and all it's moods!
