My Poetic Secret (Now Everybody Knows)

I just can’t write a villanelle,
Sestinas make me queasy.
Sonnets send me to metered hell.
Who said that writing was easy?

Sestinas make me queasy
With their strictly fashioned style.
Who said that writing was easy?
My mood is growing more hostile.

With their strictly fashioned style
Poetic forms just make me curse.
My mood is growing more hostile.
I miss the freedom of free verse.

Poetic forms just make me curse.
Sonnets send me to metered hell.
I miss the freedom of free verse.
I just can’t write a villanelle.

~~ Written for a prompt at Poetry Jam asking us to take inspiration from the phrase "Everybody knows."  Also posted for the in-form poem prompt asking for a pantoum over at Poetic Bloomings.

This is really a fun piece for me too. I also have lots of trouble wioth form poetry - tend to cry when I try to write it.

Your complaint about forms contained in a pantoum? Clever stuff, Mary. Very clever! "I miss the freedom of free verse," rhyming... really the irony is so thick, I loved every word, read it twice! Peace, Amy

haha...i def dont do form all that well...never was really educated in poetry you know...just kinda fell into it...i find my own meter, the beat of the piece and cant have that dictated to me...this was fun...and echoes my own thoughts...

Mary, That was a awesome poem. I like what you've done to your site!

I like this a lot and truly empathize. I do have to be in the right mood to write any kind of form poetry; and villanelles ARE a real challenge! Thanks for jamming!

Free verse is the only reason I ever even tried to write poetry! The forms generally drive me crazy but you did well on this one! (I think as I am never sure which styles are which).

This is great though for not liking it! You make it look easy, Mary and that's a good sign! Smiles!

I just love this poem! It makes me laugh with recognition. I'm so glad there is free form so I can write poetry! :)
