In the Dark Forest

An ancient evil
Lurks here,
Wandering amongst
Gnarled oak and cypress,
     Waiting,
          Circling,
               Hunting
For a lost traveler,
A weary soul
To serve as easy prey.
Darkness masks its steps,
A moonless night
Perfect camouflage.
     Relentless,
          Pervasive,
               Enveloping all
In its unyielding grasp,
A caterwauling demon
Whose cries
Induce terror
In the bravest heart.

~~~Written for this week's prompt over at Poetry Jam, which asked the question, "Where is your forest?"
Oh, my, Mary..so ominous and shivery. This certainly induced terror in me as I walked through this forest.
I love the words you used in this poem to make it truly frightening, Mary. Especially 'caterwauling demon.' Definitely sounds like a nightmare to me or, if not, those thoughts that go circling late at night when one CANNOT sleep!
Those dark spirits waiting in the moonless night are chilling ~ Hopefully our hearts are brave to withstand the terror ~
Wow, very scary indeed, Mary. Quite effective and definitely NOT something I will want to read shortly before visiting a shadowy forest! Excellent.
