Remembrances

© Margaret Bednar

Remembrances of gentle smiles
Give little reprieve to my pain,
Relentless tears that fall in vain,
No pardon from these grief-filled trials.

Sufficient reasons can't be found
To justify an early death,
A mournful heart that has no breath,
Filled with regrets, in sorrow drowned.

I’m drifting, lost, and so alone.
Stuck on a path of many ways
But none that lead to brighter days,
My anguish marked by chiseled stone.

~~~ This poem was written for a prompt from Imaginary Garden with Real Toads asking us to try out the In Memoriam Stanza, a variation on the envelope stanza.  The photograph was part of this prompt as well.  You can find Margaret Bednar's photos and poetry over at her blog Art Happens 365.
Grief so powerful, so painful in this. "My anguish marked by chiseled stone." I have felt this when standing at my parent's graves. Beautiful work.
Beautifully done, Mary, the voice of sorrow is so clear, your last line so stark and absolutely perfect.
Yes - a lovely grief-filled poem with a last line that is z particular zinger (in a rather sombre way). Very well done. k.
Ooh! Those last lines tug at the heart. You have captured so well, the unacceptability of death in youth, and the disorientation it causes in the ones who remain behind.
The word "anguish" leaps out at me and pulls at my heart, Mary, and your use of the envelope quatrain is so perfect, the word "anguish" drawing the reader back to "drifting, lost, and so alone".
Well done.
Wonderful to hear you reading this, Mary!! Brings so much more to your poem imo!! Such sadness captured so well and I enjoy the image of the chiseled stone to end with. :)
Thanks for stopping by and leaving me a comment last week. I thought I had left one here for you, but it seems not so that's why I'm late inrepaying the comment.
