The playing field is small,
Just the space between our windows.
The rules are simple.
Look out the window
As long as you can
Without the other one knowing.
The penalties for getting caught:
Embarrassment,
Unanswered questions,
A knowing look.
Don’t talk to each other -
It’s the unspoken rule.
The game is silly,
Yet we keep playing
And no one wins.

Gut level, Mary. This poem really smacks hard. Whew!
I wouldn't want to be there. That knowing look can haunt you forever... gut-wrenching poem, Mary.
This is interesting. It makes me think of marriage.
I think Mary really "got" this poem - she prompted me to see it deeper.
Powerful and painful...It also makes me think of marriage...nice work
at least the other one doesnt shut the window on ur face.at least here the look lingers and promises something intangible for some imperceptible tomorrow.
powerful indeed! a smack and then some - "The game is silly,
Yet we keep playing
And no one wins." - harsh reality - nicely mused!
I like it, I can't say exactly what I like, all I know is that I like it.
ahhh this is the adorable game of love. It gets better I guess. :-)
maybe the goal doesn't have to be winning?
maybe it's the playing.
Intriguing write...I thought it was a light hearted game but probably not ~
So many levels and possible interpretations here - a marriage gone cold, an illicit relationship (or the desire for one), an unrequited love.
It is wrenching when people play these mind-and-heart games.
Interesting and puts a lot of thoughts in my head.
Makes me think of nosey neighbors, but it could be about a number of things. Well done.
